News from MCC Silver Partner Progressive Computing: The XPiration of an Operating System

Business owners advised to take action now

Westchester County, NY (March 26, 2014) - Progressive Computing, Inc is making the business community aware that support for Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system, still projected to be in use by approximately 25% or more of PC users worldwide, is coming to an end as of April 8th 2014.

After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for XP, and third party software and hardware providers will no longer have to build in compatibility for XP systems. These factors will combine for a significant impact on security and operability. There are also other major issues to consider; for instance, XP machines will no longer be in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Business owners should take action now, rather than wait. For small organizations with a few XP machines in the mix, Progressive recommends replacing them. In most cases, XP machines in a business are old enough to have lasted at least 3-5 years or more, which matches industry standards for the replacement of workstations. Some business owners may face a challenge related to business software compatibility, i.e. some older software that only runs properly in an XP environment. In this case, there may be some additional time and costs involved in upgrading both software and machines.

“The worst thing you can do is nothing,” says Progressive CEO Robert Cioffi. “If a system or network is compromised due to a security exploit, there is a price to consider in terms of remediation and potential damage to reputation.”

In addition to avoiding issues, users who upgrade can expect a vastly improved experience. XP is a 12-year-old operating system, and the world of technology has progressed dramatically since its release. With most businesses placing a premium on productivity, it’s counterintuitive to expect an old system to offer satisfactory performance.

Windows XP lasted so long because it was a rock solid platform upon release, and featured a vast array of available compatible hardware and software. Businesses quickly came to rely on its dependability. When Microsoft later released Windows Vista, it had some initial glitches with hardware support that left consumers with a poor perception and resulted in a large amount of negative press. This created a situation wherein many business owners were unwilling to leave the very stable XP platform to try something new. Windows 7, released in 2009, is superior to XP in all major benchmarks. The vast majority of companies that have moved from XP to

Windows 7 have had a fairly good transition. “We’re aware that there are many business owners out there who aren’t sure how to proceed, and we really encourage them to reach out to an IT expert as soon as possible to make a plan,” said Cioffi. “When it comes to maintaining productivity and keeping technology costs down, a proactive approach is always your best bet.”

MCC Guest Blogger Gil Effron: How do you deal with the things you don't like to do?

Each of us has things we do well and like to do. Call this our comfort zone. Each of us also has things we don't do well and don't like to do. Call this our un-comfort zone.

Personally, I've found the best way for me to deal with the activities in my un-comfort zone -- the ones I don't like to do but the ones I know are vital to my overall success -- is through discipline and planning.

I simply schedule the things I don't like and add them to my daily calendar, usually in one-hour chunks. When the calendar alarm chimes, I stop what I'm doing and focus on dealing with the un-comfort zone things.

This technique seems to work. The stuff I don't like to do is easier to deal with because I'm taking it in smaller chunks of time.

Warby Parker Opens at Historic Former Lascoff Drugs Site on UES

UPPER EAST SIDE — Eyewear company Warby Parker is bringing its hip frames to a Lexington Avenue storefront that formerly housed New York's first licensed pharmacy.

The national eyeglass retailer soft-opened Wednesday at the corner of East 82nd Street, where Lascoff Drugs closed after nearly a century in the space.

Lascoff, which shuttered in July 2012, was the first licensed pharmacy in the state and closed when its last owner retired. Residents were very attached to the pharmacy with its apothecary jars and old-world feel.

MCC Guest Blogger Justin Croxton: Content Marketing & Local Search

By Justin Croxton to Marketing

Content marketing remains the buzz for most organizations and it continues to grow. Simply view the Google Trends report to the right. How do we create content that connects with our audiences? Many of the larger organizations are rapidly producing content because they possess larger budgets and know this is what’s needed to attract more quality brand mentions and links to their websites.

Related: A Small Business Content Marketing Strategy: How to Start

But content marketing for smaller local businesses is often overlooked yet a powerful mechanism they can deploy. Just because you’re a small to midsize company does not mean you don’t have content opportunities to take advantage of (Tweet This!). Small business should begin by identifying local content opportunities and tying them in with local SEO efforts to improve linking and brand mentions.
Types Of Content For Local Businesses

Local businesses have plenty of content opportunities to gain more exposure and elicit brand mentions. Our objective is to leverage these content assets and promote them accordingly. The key is in both the content creation and outreach to the appropriate organizations and businesses. One cannot be successful without the other. The content must be of value to the people we share it with.

The Empire State Building: A Tribute

MCC’s Green Design and Construction sub-committee recently toured the Empire State Building to learn about their sustainability initiatives. One of our attendees, Victoria Drozdov of Creative Environment Solutions (CES) Corp., wrote a poetic response which depicts the work done by artisans and engineers to restore this iconic NYC building. We hope you enjoy!

Empire

Rebuilt for all to see.
Majestic, significant, a spectacle.

We listen and gather bits and pieces of history.
The ceiling set just under the prior ruined one with
thin layers of silver plate and even thinner gold plate
dissolving into the air if not properly applied by the artisans.

Gears, stars, referencing the industrial age and
echoing heavens above, at forty feet over our heads.
Lights dimmed at daybreak allowing

passersby, if they look up, and it is hard to resist, to
absorb the full brilliance of the marble,
cut just so that no seam is seen, only the continuous wave of its veins.

The guide’s mesmerizing words bring to life the transformation.
He leads us on through the exhibit as we marvel at each step taken to
rebuild the old monument to its current modern state.

We travel through corridor and elevator arteries,
Admiring its glory, inside and out,
From high corner suites to the underground belly of the structure.

Before leaving, I look around one last time.
With intricate details planned in ambitious goals
through shared dreams and common needs
something deteriorating became once again alive.

Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Poll on Banning Horse Drawn Carriages

Contact: Nancy Ploeger, President, Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, 212-473-7875 ornp@manhattancc.org

MCC polled its members on the Mayor’s plan to ban horse drawn carriages in NYC. Over 250 member business owners and executives answered the quick one question poll, “Do you think horse drawn carriages should be banned in NYC?”
24% voted in favor of the ban and 76% are against the ban

Comments ranged from:
  • “Cruel”
  • “Bad for the horses and the traffic
  • “They should be eliminated by attrition”

To
  • “As an animal lover I feel as long as the horses are treated humanely it would be a shame to ban the horse drawn carriages. It's been a NYC tradition for a very long time and it's a lovely memorable way to tour the city. Let's not forget the people it employs. Back off Mayor Deblasio”
  • “As long as the horses are humanely treated they should be allowed to work”
  • “We're supposed to be supporting "sustainable" transport options, not banning them. Horse transport will outlast motor vehicles in NYC - if we allow it. Anyhow, it's the height of hypocrisy to ban carriages and continue to celebrate NYPD horses in our streets. Honestly!”

And there were many suggestions to:

“Reallocate the horse drawn carriages to drive on the BRIDAL PATHS already in Central Park - and move the stables into the park at 81st police station... SO THE HORSES LIVE IN THE PARK AND NEVER HAVE TO BE ON THE STREETS -- KEEP THE HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES IN NYC.”

MCC Partner News: MCC partner E3Think is the is the economic, strategy and planning partner for the Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken bike share program. MCC and E3Think partnered on a Transportation Transformation Conference in 2011 as part of the MCC Green Business Committee programming.

HOBOKEN, JERSEY CITY & WEEHAWKEN TO LAUNCH REGIONAL BIKE SHARE SYSTEM
800 Smart Bikes Will Form Largest Next-Generation Bike Share System in North America

The cities of Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken are partnering to launch a regional bike share system in the summer of 2014 that will be the largest next-generation bike share system in North America. The system will feature 800 smart-bikes, 50 bike stations, and 2 full-service pavilions at no cost to the cities.

“Bike sharing is an affordable, sustainable, and convenient transportation option,” said Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We are excited to partner with leading innovators to bring this next-generation system to our residents, businesses and visitors at no cost to taxpayers. I am proud to build upon our successful pilot bike share program and work with our neighbors in Jersey City and Weehawken to create a regional system.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop was equally enthusiastic: “We’re proud to take this step toward a greener, more bike friendly Jersey City. Providing a new transportation option throughout the city while simultaneously reducing pollution, traffic congestion and demand for parking is a home run, especially given that that it won’t cost the taxpayers a cent. We believe this system will be a model for others throughout the nation.”

“We are very excited to participate in the bike share program with Hoboken and Jersey City,” said Weehawken Councilwoman Rosemary Lavagnino. “This program will allow residents to leave their cars at home while still giving them access to Weehawken and their neighboring communities.”

The program will be operated by Bike and Roll, the largest bike rental company in the United States, and will use bicycle technology manufactured by Nextbike, a leading operator and supplier of bike sharing systems with over 17,000 bicycles in 60 cities in 14 countries. E3Think is the economic, strategy and planning partner for the consortium, and investment capital will be provided by P3 Global Management, a smart city investment firm.

“Bike and Roll is excited to have been selected to operate this cutting edge bicycle sharing system for Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken,” said Chris Wogas, President of Bike and Roll. “Together with our partners, we are bringing a technologically advanced network of bikes to these cities with zero cost to taxpayers. This is truly a value added program for the cities, its residents and visitors.”

The system will feature “smart bikes,” the next generation of bike share technology. Traditional bike sharing systems rely on a “smart dock” approach for storing bicycles, which requires expensive infrastructure for docking stations. The “smart lock” approach relies on bicycles with built-in locks and communications equipment, providing increased flexibility at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems.

“The time is right to introduce an economic and flexible bike sharing program made in Germany to the USA,” said Ralf Kalupner, founder and managing director of nextbike GmbH. “Bike sharing needs to be economic and that’s what we have proven for the last 10 years.”

The Nextbike Cruiser Comfort bike features a 7-gear shift, puncture-resistant tires, integrated LED lights with stand-light function, hub dynamo, kickstand, basket, bell, mudguard, chain guard, hand and coaster brakes, and height-adjustable seat.

“Bike share is the core of new urban mobility for cities around the world,” said Tom Glendening, President of E3Think. “In contrast to the expensive technology in some markets, Nextbike's low cost, flexible smart-bike technology offers a very, very positive future. This bike share program could very well be a model for cities across the globe.”

Revenue sources for the program will include sponsorships, advertising, and user fees, and the cities will receive a percentage of profits after capital expenditures have been recouped.

“We see bike share programs as a cornerstone of economically and socially healthy cities,” said Jim Campbell, CEO of P3GM. “We are thrilled to have been selected by Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken to bring this enormous benefit to their citizens, tourists and students alike.”

Pricing options will include annual, weekly and daily memberships. Annual memberships will include free use for the first 45 minutes of each ride. Customers will be able to register online or at solar-powered kiosks. Members will be able to rent a bicycle via a customer card, mobile application (iOS and Android) or phone call via an interactive voice response system.

The two full-service pavilions, to be located in Hoboken and Jersey City, will include a bike share station, conventional bike rental, helmets and safety support, biking equipment, and tourist information.

The contract award requires the approval of the Councils of the three cities.

MCC Community Benefit Fund Grantee: The New York Jazz Choreography Project at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House

The New York Jazz Choreography Project at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House

On Sunday, February 9, 2014, Jazz Choreography Enterprises (JCE) took the New York Jazz Choreography Project to the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House as part of the Second Sundays Performance Series. The series provides high quality, affordable live performances for the
community served by the Neighborhood House on the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island, though all are welcome to attend.

For this program, JCE Artistic Directors Marian Hyun and Merete Muenter assembled a group of choreographers from their previous shows:

Jessica Black
Tony Fraser and Jaime Shannon
Marian Hyun
Joyce King
Christopher Liddell
Luigi
Cat Manturuk
Sue Samuels
Alan Spaulding

The Jazz Project was held in the auditorium at the Neighborhood House at 331 East 70th Street. The performance was an hour long, and there were 12 pieces in a variety of jazz dance genres, including swing, musical theater, and contemporary. Following the performance, there was a question and answer session in which audience members could ask the dancers and choreographers about their work.

This performance was well attended and enthusiastically received by the audience members, many of whom are on fixed incomes or are low-wage earners. Thanks to a generous grant from the MCC Community Benefit Festival Grant Project and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, JCE was able to pay its choreographers for their wonderful work, which was enjoyed by many who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend a live performance. We at JCE are grateful to MCC for giving us the opportunity to keep jazz thriving in our community!

This program was made possible in part by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.  All of JCE's programs are made possible in part by contributions from its corporate sponsors, the Long Island Development Corporation and Salon Ishi.
