HOBOKEN, JERSEY CITY & WEEHAWKEN TO LAUNCH REGIONAL BIKE SHARE SYSTEM

800 Smart Bikes Will Form Largest Next-Generation Bike Share System in North America

 The cities of Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken are partnering to launch a regional bike share system in the summer of 2014 that will be the largest next-generation bike share system in North America. The system will feature 800 smart-bikes, 50 bike stations, and 2 full-service pavilions at no cost to the cities.

“Bike sharing is an affordable, sustainable, and convenient transportation option,” said Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We are excited to partner with leading innovators to bring this next-generation system to our residents, businesses and visitors at no cost to taxpayers. I am proud to build upon our successful pilot bike share program and work with our neighbors in Jersey City and Weehawken to create a regional system.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop was equally enthusiastic: “We’re proud to take this step toward a greener, more bike friendly Jersey City. Providing a new transportation option throughout the city while simultaneously reducing pollution, traffic congestion and demand for parking is a home run, especially given that that it won’t cost the taxpayers a cent. We believe this system will be a model for others throughout the nation.”

“We are very excited to participate in the bike share program with Hoboken and Jersey City,” said Weehawken Councilwoman Rosemary Lavagnino. “This program will allow residents to leave their cars at home while still giving them access to Weehawken and their neighboring communities.”

The program will be operated by Bike and Roll, the largest bike rental company in the United States, and will use bicycle technology manufactured by Nextbike, a leading operator and supplier of bike sharing systems with over 17,000 bicycles in 60 cities in 14 countries. E3Think is the economic, strategy and planning partner for the consortium, and investment capital will be provided by P3 Global Management, a smart city investment firm.

“Bike and Roll is excited to have been selected to operate this cutting edge bicycle sharing system for Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken,” said Chris Wogas, President of Bike and Roll. “Together with our partners, we are bringing a technologically advanced network of bikes to these cities with zero cost to taxpayers. This is truly a value added program for the cities, its residents and visitors.”

The system will feature “smart bikes,” the next generation of bike share technology. Traditional bike sharing systems rely on a “smart dock” approach for storing bicycles, which requires expensive infrastructure for docking stations. The “smart lock” approach relies on bicycles with built-in locks and communications equipment, providing increased flexibility at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems.

“The time is right to introduce an economic and flexible bike sharing program made in Germany to the USA,” said Ralf Kalupner, founder and managing director of nextbike GmbH. “Bike sharing needs to be economic and that’s what we have proven for the last 10 years.”

The Nextbike Cruiser Comfort bike features a 7-gear shift, puncture-resistant tires, integrated LED lights with stand-light function, hub dynamo, kickstand, basket, bell, mudguard, chain guard, hand and coaster brakes, and height-adjustable seat.

“Bike share is the core of new urban mobility for cities around the world,” said Tom Glendening, President of E3Think. “In contrast to the expensive technology in some markets, Nextbike's low cost, flexible smart-bike technology offers a very, very positive future. This bike share program could very well be a model for cities across the globe.”

Revenue sources for the program will include sponsorships, advertising, and user fees, and the cities will receive a percentage of profits after capital expenditures have been recouped.

“We see bike share programs as a cornerstone of economically and socially healthy cities,” said Jim Campbell, CEO of P3GM. “We are thrilled to have been selected by Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken to bring this enormous benefit to their citizens, tourists and students alike.”

Pricing options will include annual, weekly and daily memberships. Annual memberships will include free use for the first 45 minutes of each ride. Customers will be able to register online or at solar-powered kiosks. Members will be able to rent a bicycle via a customer card, mobile application (iOS and Android) or phone call via an interactive voice response system.

The two full-service pavilions, to be located in Hoboken and Jersey City, will include a bike share station, conventional bike rental, helmets and safety support, biking equipment, and tourist information.

The contract award requires the approval of the Councils of the three cities.

MCC Partner Southwest Makes Travel One Less Burden For Patients By Providing More Than $2.8 Million In Free Flights Through Medical Transportation Grant Program

Several New York City-Area Hospitals Selected as 2014 Recipients

Southwest Airlines announced today that 73 nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations from across the nation have been selected for the Southwest Airlines 2014 Medical Transportation Grant Program, with the total impact touching 99 facilities. The New York City-Area hospitals selected as 2014 participants are:

• The National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction for the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, for the second year in a row 
• North Shore University Hospital, for the fourth straight year 
• Lennox Hill Hospital, for the first time 
• Patient AirLift Services (PALS), for the fourth straight year 

These recipients will have the freedom to provide airline tickets to patients who must travel for treatment.

Southwest’s Medical Transportation Grant Program seeks to lessen the burden of travel expenses for families who are facing serious illness by providing complimentary, roundtrip airline tickets to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations. Off-hour truck deliveries in Manhattan reduce traffic, empower business owners

NYC spending $500 million in 2013 fleet renewal

FLUSHING MEADOWS PARK, NY. The City of New York is investing half a billion dollars in its municipal fleet this year, much of it focused on continuing efforts to create “the greenest fleet in the country,” according to Keith Kerman, deputy commissioner and chief fleet management officer.

Representing a major renewal of the city’s Fire, Police and Sanitation Department fleets, the 2013 buy will include 1,000 hybrid and electric vehicles, Kerman told Fleet Owner. “For example, we will have replaced every gasoline [powered] sedan in the Dept. of Sanitation with a hybrid or EV within the next two months,” he said. “They have 500 sedans.”

The new equipment will also include 20 CNG-powered heavy-duty trucks for refuse collection and other sanitation applications, and CNG-powered cargo vans from GMC for park maintenance and other chores, as well as 60 plug-in EVs from Ford and Nissan.

Other green-fleet initiatives already undertaken by New York’s municipal fleet operations include a citywide mandate that all diesel-powered trucks – including emergency equipment such as fire trucks – run on B5 biodiesel, with non-emergency vehicles switching to B20 from April to November. The city has also embarked on a retrofit program for diesel particulate filters (DPFs) for older trucks and completed work on threenatural gas fueling facilities, one solely dedicated to heavy trucks run by the Sanitation department.

Kerman was speaking at the 25th annual fleet show hosted by the N.Y.C. Parks Dept. in the old World’s Fair Grounds. The Parks’ fleet operations, which were once headed by Kerman, holds the show every spring to introduce other city agencies and nearby municipal fleets to new truck technology, much of it focused on clean diesel and alternative fuels.

New this year at the show was a ceremony announcing the first “certified” fleets under a new Empire Green Fleets program sponsored by the area’s local Clean Cities organization, Empire Clean Cities. The group analyzes equipment and fuel-use data from fleets seeking the certification, focusing on reductions in petroleum use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to Christina Ficicchia, executive dir.

Delta opens $1.4B international terminal at JFK

(Bloomberg) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. sharpened the jockeying for the highest-paying passengers in New York, the biggest U.S. aviation market, as it opened a $1.4 billion international terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport. 

A joint venture with Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd., in which Delta is taking a 49% stake, will include seven daily JFK flights to London's Heathrow airport once the purchase is completed this year, President Ed Bastian said in an interview before today's inauguration of the new facility.

Over the past year, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, E3Think and ConEdison have hosted the highly successful Transportation Transformation series.  The first event was at Tesla Motors, the second, third and fourth at ConEdison.  All four sold out.  The fifth (and finale for the MCC) will be a Global Summit on cities and transportation innovation and due to popularity will be at a larger venue at NYIT. 

TransTrans participants have included Siemens, Tesla Motors, Plugless Power (in a pilot with Google), Bcycle/Trek, and Alta (winner of NYC’s bikeshare program), and many more.  TransTrans success is partly due to the fact that cities which are growing at break neck speed need transportation solutions.  The current global population of 7 billion people is expected to grow to over 9 billion by 2050, with 75% of all people living in cities.

The market numbers are stunning.  In 2011 nearly $1.5 trillion autos and light trucks were sold worldwide.  Add the growth of bikes as well as wealth of smart transportation systems and the transportation is even larger.  Most interesting is the fact that Cisco, IBM, Qualcomm and other hitherto non-transportation companies have entered the transportation space. 

The Global Summit will feature a keynote from a prominent transportation specialist, panel discussions addressing fleets, waterways, mass transit, bikes, electric vehicles, smart systems and cities as well as remarks from local politicians. Sponsor tables will be open throughout the day and during the evening cocktail reception. In addition to a capacity of 250 people, the event will be webcast to China and other key markets. Over 15,000 people will receive information on the summit.

MCC Transportation Transformation Series, October 25th at Con Edison

Earlier this year MCC Member Tom Glendening of E3NYC came to us and asked us to help him put on a series of events about the changes in transportation going on in NYC and other cities around the world. Cities are looking for cleaner more efficient modes of transportation as urban centers become more populated. We formed a transportation team which includes Willem Houck of ParkPod, Philip Kiracofe of Horizen Ventures (an urban bike advocate) and Yale Klat, an attorney who works with companies in cleantech. We had our kick off reception in May at the Tesla showroom which showcased high end electric cars. On September 27th we had our first overview and panel discussion on the topic. Tomorrow we will look at the economic opportunities around these changes. here is a description of the event and link to register. After a successful launch at the Tesla showroom last May, and an at-capacity-crowd workshop on the transformation at Con Ed’s headquarters on September 27th, we are pleased to announce our third event, a discussion on the investment and economic development potential of the Transportation Transformation: it’s a multi-billion dollar transformation.

This Transportation Transformation with the E3Think team offers a logic as to why transportation innovation is a much safer investment than other clean tech investments. 

After that we will start the core of the program with the first presentation of NYC’s new – and the world’s largest – bikeshare system to the NYC business community.

Authors of the now famous Harvard Alumni Study on the economics of bikeshare will be there, so will numerous start-ups, from GPS based bikes, electric bikes to a proposal for magnetically elevated trains for New York State (traversing the landscape at over 200 mph).
And with sufficient time, there will be a quick update on the E3NYC proposal to host a 6 month cleantech world’s fair along the East River in 2016.
