JPMorgan Chase Launches $250 Million Global Economic Opportunity Initiative

The following press release was issued this morning:

JPMorgan Chase Launches $250 Million Global Economic Opportunity Initiative

Through research, data and investments, "New Skills at Work" aims to revolutionize the way employers and skills trainers develop talent for jobs in local high-growth industries

NEW YORK, NY – December 12, 2013 – JPMorgan Chase & Co. today launched an unprecedented five-year, $250 million global workforce readiness and demand-driven training initiative called New Skills at Work. The new initiative will be the largest ever private-sector effort aimed at addressing the "skills gap" that exists across many industries, such as healthcare and advanced manufacturing, where not enough trained workers have the specific skills to fill the jobs available.

The announcement was made at an event in Washington, DC hosted by the Aspen Institute featuring JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council Melody Barnes, and Aspen President and CEO Walter Isaacson.

According to an IMF analysis, the skills gap accounts for approximately one-third of the U.S. unemployment rate. By 2020, an estimated 63% of the projected 48 million job openings will require some sort of post-secondary school training. Using research and data analysis, public-private partnerships and engagement with local leaders and organizations, New Skills at Work will accelerate economic growth by supporting training programs that will have the greatest impact.

"Addressing the skills gap can be one of our most powerful tools for reducing unemployment and creating more broadly shared prosperity," said Jamie Dimon, chairman and chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase. "JPMorgan is using its best assets, including industry intelligence and strong partnerships in local communities, to provide a platform for employers, educators and workforce participants to help people gain the skills they need to succeed."

Dimon will chair the JPMorgan Chase Global Workforce Advisory Council, which will bring together a group of private sector, non-profit, education and workforce development thought leaders to ensure the effectiveness of the effort. The Advisory Council will advise on the development, implementation and evaluation of New Skills at Work. Melody Barnes, former Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, will co-chair the Council.

One of the key challenges is that too little data about employer demand is available to inform workforce training programs. New Skills at Work will fill that void by producing Workforce Readiness Gap Reports in local markets to help drive more effective and strategic local workforce planning. This research will explore regional level workforce deficiencies and challenges and seek to identify holes in local job markets and the skills needed to fill identified gaps. The data will be used to inform program development efforts with both the supply and demand sides of the skills gap challenge. On the demand side, the data will help business groups and sector associations to broadcast the skills they need to compete and prosper. On the supply side, the data will help leading national workforce training groups including the Aspen Institute's Forum for Community Solutions, the Institute for Public Policy Research, the National Academy Foundation, Jobs for the Future, Participle, Year Up and YouthBuild develop the training programs and credentials targeted to meet employer demands.

"Our work with JPMorgan Chase is vitally important to the future success of America's workforce," said Steve Patrick, executive director of The Aspen Forum for Community

Solutions at The Aspen Institute. "In our country, 6.8 million young people graduate high school unprepared to meet the needs of a 21st century economy, and with this new initiative, we can create the capacity to drive solutions that connect youth to careers vital to America's growth."

New Skills at Work research and programming will focus on major U.S. and European urban areas, with an initial focus on Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area and London. Specific grants and partnerships for individual cities will be announced in the early months of 2014.

"Closing the skills gap has to be one of the top priorities of our economic development efforts around the nation," said Mayor Emanuel. "In Chicago, we have focused on training our students to ensure they have the skills and education they'll need to get the jobs that will be available in the future. Around the nation, we must direct our collective effort on similar missions, and I'm grateful that JP Morgan Chase has put so much energy and resources into addressing these critical issues. I look forward to working with all Americans to make progress on these important economic issues and get people into good jobs and careers."

In Chicago, Mayor Emanuel's work to close the skills gap includes an innovative program at the City Colleges of Chicago – called College to Careers. The program, launched in 2011, partners faculty and staff at City Colleges with more than 100 industry leaders to design curriculum and facilities and offer internships and job opportunities to ensure Chicagoans are ready to hit the ground running in fast-growing fields. Leaders from the private and public sectors, college faculties and industry groups come together to design innovative coursework, curriculum and training, to ensure students are trained with the skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow.

The partnerships that New Skills at Work will develop with non-profit organizations will aim to expand education and training programs that are proven effective at helping Americans acquire new job skills and find employment in their communities. For example, Year Up was specifically chosen for their targeted job training investments that help support young people ages 16 to 24 – both those who are currently enrolled in school and those who are not on a path towards a degree – as well as adults who are underemployed or need additional training to progress in a career or transition to a new field.

"This initiative from JPMorgan Chase is investing in more than our work, it's investing in building the partnerships necessary to catalyze a new workforce," Gerald Chertavian, founder and chief executive officer of Year Up. "Despite talent and motivation, millions of young adults lack access to training for careers that provide them with a living wage. At the same time, U.S. businesses need more and better-trained talent to compete on the global stage, highlighting the need for a program like New Skills at Work, providing tools to gain the necessary career skills."

Chauncy Lennon, PhD, JPMorgan Chase's Senior Program Director for Workforce Development, will lead New Skills at Work. Lennon recently joined JPMorgan Chase from the Ford Foundation, where his work focused on promoting economic advancement for low-income workers by improving access to workforce development and work support programs.

FOGO DE CHÃO MAKES NEW YORK DEBUT ON DECEMBER 19th

MCC welcomes new Friends Partner Fogo de Chão!

Fogo de Chão

Internationally-Renowned Southern Brazilian Steakhouse Opens First Big Apple Location, Their Largest Outpost in the World, in Midtown Manhattan

Start spreading the news – Fogo de Chão has arrived in New York! The award-winning churrascaria – Brazilian steakhouse – which first opened in Porto Alegre, Brazil 35 years ago– will open in the heart of Midtown Manhattan on Thursday, December 19th on West 53rd Street (lunch begins Monday, December 23). At 16,000 square feet, this is the largest Fogo de Chão in the world. The New York location will stand as a flagship among their locations in iconic cities like Beverly Hills, Washington DC, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Big Apple’s first Fogo de Chão is a short walk from Times Square and just steps away from MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art. This prime location makes Fogo de Chão the ideal dining spot for locals, tourists, and dignitaries alike. The $16+ million dollar, three-level design of this expansive restaurant seats more than 300 guests and includes two bars -- one on the main level and a mezzanine bar overlooking the restaurant. For the first time, Fogo de Chão will offer a separate bar menu exclusively for the New York location.

“The Manhattan opening of Fogo de Chão is a major milestone in our 35-year history, on par with our arrival to the United States from Brazil in 1997” says Fogo de Chão Chief Executive Officer Larry Johnson. “This has been a long time coming and we’re thrilled to have found the ideal location to introduce New Yorkers to our Brazilian culinary traditions.”

The first Fogo de Chão location featuring designs by renowned architect Jeffrey Beers, the restaurant reflects Beers’ inspiration of the “classic gaucho” way of life, a South American cowboy who sleeps under the expansive skyline of stars and prepares his meals on an open fire. With experience living and working in Brazil, Beers shares a particular affinity for Brazilian culture and design. Upon entering the restaurant, guests can immediately sense the authentic gaucho spirit of Fogo de Chão. They are greeted by a 17-foot-high, bas-relief sculpture of Antônio Caringi’s famous Brazilian sculpture, O Lacador (The Lassoer), also a historical monument in Porto Alegre, Brazil. A striking multi-level Escher-esque stairway with glass railings leads guests between the restaurant’s three levels and a wooden ribbed proscenium wraps across the ceiling with alabaster lights throughout. Once at the top level, an oversized braided leather chandelier commands center stage in the mezzanine bar along with a curved ‘overlook’ with a drink ledge where guests can enjoy a cocktail while gazing down on the street level bar and main dining room, 40 feet below. The restaurant also features private and semi-private dining areas to accommodate special events.

Brazil is home to some of the best food in the world, and now Fogo de Chão is giving New Yorkers the opportunity to experience the authenticity of Brazilian culture and food. The restaurant’s unique dining experience is based on the centuries-old gaucho tradition known as churrasco, the art of roasting meats over an open fire. The story behind Fogo de Chão began while its founders were young boys growing up in Southern Brazil. Through the years they learned how to grill the meats the gaucho way from their fathers, and soon took charge of a culinary tradition that was passed down generation to generation for over three centuries.

Fogo de Chão specializes in espeto corrido, or “continuous service,” where a team of Brazilian-trained gaucho chefs, led by Head Gaucho Chef Ezequiel Manfrin, prepare, cook and carve tableside 16 different cuts of beef, lamb, chicken and pork. Guests decide both the pace and the portions of their dining experience by using a small, double-sided disc that signals to the gaucho chefs that they are ready for additional service. Placing the green side up signals to gauchos to continue presenting meats to the table and placing the red side up signals that one is satisfied – at least until they are ready to begin sampling the meats again!

While meats are at the forefront, the restaurant also features a gourmet salad and sides bar with more than 30 selections, including gluten-free offerings. Options include fresh vegetables, cured meats, warm Brazilian cheese bread, imported cheeses, caramelized bananas and crispy polenta. To complement the dining experience, Fogo de Chão boasts an impressive, award-winning 200-label wine list, as well as an array of South American-inspired cocktails, many of which change seasonally. The decadent dessert menu features their signature, house-made Papaya Cream with fresh papaya, vanilla ice cream and Crème de Cassis liqueur, South American Flan, Crème Brûlée and much more.

Announcing the first ever East Village Gift Guide

A guide to the best holiday gifts from East Village Merchants
The East Village Gift Guide presents 36 unique items found locally that make great gifts for this
holiday season. These items are all from independently owned businesses throughout the East
Village, a neighborhood on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

This guide - the first of its kind - is the product of the East Village Community Coalition (EVCC),
an organization at work to recognize, sustain, and support the architectural and cultural
character of the East Village. For seven years, EVCC has been producing the “Get Local! Guide
to East Village Shops,” a printed directory of over four hundred shops in the East Village. The
East Village Gift Guide expands upon this “Get Local!” campaign by helping people shop locally
during the holidays. The gift guide invites East Villagers, New Yorkers and visitors from all over to
discover stores of the East Village and their one-of-a-kind products, all of which distinguish East
Village shops from the rest of the city.

In addition to showcasing the unique items from East Village merchants, this guide is one of the
first initiatives aimed at increasing the collaboration between local businesses. Over the last
three months, EVCC has been working with small business owners to form a
neighborhood-wide merchants association that will help promote and advocate for the small and
independent businesses in the East Village. Using funding from AvenueNYC, a program of the
NYC Department of Small Business Services, and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce,
EVCC is working to develop a merchants association. A Steering Committee of local merchants
has given the association its official name, the East Village Independent Merchants Association
(EVIMA), and is planning the inaugural meeting for EVIMA at the end of January.

Copies of the East Village Gift Guide are available in both digital or print formats. Digital copies of
the guide are available at this link or on EVCC’s website. Printed copies are available at
participating stores (listed below), EVCC’s office (143 Avenue B) and the FUNKtional Art Fair, a
holiday fair located La Plaza Cultural Community garden at Avenue C and 9th Street. Visit one of
these locations to pick up your very own gift guide!

If you would like to know more about EVCC and EVIMA or help us spread word about the guide,
